Patetic Variation is a documented performance piece that overlays spoken text over a roaming field recording of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Sternklang, performed in Oslo during the 2016 iteration of Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival in Norway. The piece was conducted by Andrea Molino, performed by the Nordic Voices ensemble with Andreas Fischer, Kjell Tore Innervik, and students from Norwegian Academy of Music and took place at five separate ‘stations’ around the Ekeberg Sculpture Park in eastern Oslo. The recording of the performance was played in Brooklyn, New York while a series of texts were randomly selected by a performer. Over the course of an hour, these texts were given to another performer who randomly selected and read selections from the text.
